Bhajju Shyam

Bhajju Singh Shyam (born 1971 in Patangarh, Madhya Pradesh) is one of India's most celebrated contemporary masters of Gond-Pardhaan tribal painting. In 2018, the Government of India conferred upon him the prestigious Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honor, recognizing his transformative contribution to indigenous and global visual arts.

The Living Heritage of Patangarh & Jangarh Kalam

Born into the Pardhaan sub-group of the Gond tribal community in the forest village of Patangarh in central India, Bhajju grew up surrounded by ancestral storytelling, music, and the sacred ritual of mural painting (Digna). As a young apprentice at Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal alongside his legendary uncle Jangarh Singh Shyam, Bhajju pioneered an evocative signature style known worldwide for its extraordinary balance of intricate pointillism (fine dot-work), rhythmic lines, and vibrant narrative symbolism.

International Acclaim & The London Jungle Book

Bhajju Shyam catapulted Gond folk art onto the international modern art platform with his seminal publication, The London Jungle Book (Tara Books, 2004). Chronicling his travels to the United Kingdom, he reimagined London's modern architecture, Big Ben, the Underground tube, and red buses through the animistic visual lexicon of the Gond forest cosmos.

His masterpiece collaborative book, The Night Life of Trees (2006), won the coveted Bologna Ragazzi Award at the Bologna Children's Book Fair in 2008. His works have been exhibited at prestigious museums and galleries across London, Paris, Tokyo, Melbourne, New York, New Delhi, and Milan.

Signature Technique & Materials

Master Bhajju's paintings utilize organic mineral pigments, handmade canvas, archival inks, and acrylic washes. Each composition is built upon micro-patterns of dots, repeating scales, and seed textures that bring animals, deities, sacred Mahua trees, and river spirits to mesmerizing life.
